Mozambique pitched its energy sector to African leaders, financiers and private investors at the Africa50 General Assembly in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on Wednesday, as the government seeks to attract capital to expand power infrastructure and achieve universal electricity access by 2030.
Finance Minister Carla Louveira, representing President Daniel Chapo at the gathering, led the presentation, which brought together African heads of state, development finance institutions and private investors to mobilise resources for strategic continental infrastructure projects.
Minister Louveira highlighted Mozambique’s considerable endowment in natural gas, renewable energy and critical minerals, assets she described as positioning the country favourably to capture investment flows and accelerate its energy transition.
“We believe we have placed our information at the disposal of this platform so that more investments can be channelled to Mozambique,” she said.
Louveira reiterated the government’s commitment to securing universal electricity access by 2030 — a target that covers approximately 33 million Mozambicans — through grid expansion and diversification of the country’s energy mix.
She explained that Mozambique is scaling up the use of natural gas for domestic and vehicular consumption while simultaneously promoting the adoption of electric vehicles, a dual strategy aimed at strengthening energy security and driving sustainable development.
The minister also called on African countries to develop alternative financing mechanisms to address the constraints imposed by shrinking fiscal space for infrastructure investment.
“We are exchanging experiences with a view to achieving the common objective of African countries, which is to find new forms of financing to meet the challenge of reduced fiscal space for infrastructure investment,” she said, according to the Mozambique Information Agency.
Louveira underscored that Africa50 brings together governments, banks, funding agencies, multilateral institutions and private investors, making it a strategic platform for advancing structuring projects and reinforcing investment partnerships.
The conference was opened by Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan and drew senior African figures including Kenya’s Vice-President, African Development Bank President Sidi Ould Tah, and representatives from financial institutions and development partners across the continent.
