The southern province of Inhambane needs nearly 300 million meticais for post-cyclone recovery, a source at the National Institute for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management announced Wednesday.
“For the province to return to what it was before the passage of these cyclones, we are in need of an amount of about 291 million meticais,” said Cândido Mapute, delegate of the National Institute for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management in Inhambane.
The delegate was speaking during a session of the emergency operation center, where the impact of the rainy and cyclonic season 2020-2021 was analyzed.
Mozambique has been ravaged since October by extreme weather events, especially storm Chalane and cyclones Eloise and Guambe, in addition to other weeks of heavy rain and floods.
According to the official, the areas that most need intervention are agriculture, education, health, and for access roads.
“For the urgent needs, especially for the most affected districts, we are talking about 41 million meticais that the Government must urgently mobilize to meet” the needs of the province, he said.
Mozambique is considered one of the countries most severely affected by climate change in the world, facing cyclical flooding and tropical cyclones.
