Inhambane Commercializes 2 Thousand Tons of Cashew Nuts

The district of Funhalouro, located in Inhambane, sold about two thousand tons of
thousand tons of cashew nuts, an amount that earned local producers 64 million
million meticais, at a time when the commercialization campaign is still ongoing.

The authorities of the economic activities sector in that district of the interior of Inhambane province, the quantity of commercialized cashew nuts represents a reduction of about 31 million meticais, if compared to the one achieved in the same period last year, when a financial receipt of about 95 million meticais was obtained.

In the last campaign, the district sold 3.854 thousand tons of cashew nuts, which allowed the collection of a little more than 142 million meticais. One
kilogram of the product is sold at 37 meticais in the district.

João Rafael Guimangalisso, responsible for the commercialization of cashew nuts in the District Services for Economic Activities, said that the reduction in the commercialization of this crop results from the regular rainfall since the end of last year.

He explained that the rain that has been falling since December last year has contributed negatively in the production and commercialization of cashew nuts, a situation that has affected producers, buyers and other stakeholders in the process.

The situation, according to the source, is worsening at this time of marketing,
because producers have nowhere to display their production due to heavy rains
that have been registered in the last three weeks.

In addition to the lack of a place to store, the heavy rains have a negative impact on
negative impact on the quality of the nuts, reducing demand and consequent price drop in the national and international market.

Of the 3,500 tons planned for the current campaign, the cashew sector in Funhalouro expects low commercialization, which could negatively affect the producers’ projections.

“This year’s commercialization will be unproductive, especially for unemployed young people who look at the process as an opportunity, where they come up
seasonal jobs, through loading to the warehouses and packing. This process happens before the product is exported to the national and international market”, he referred.
