Mozambique’s Ministry of Transport and Communications has admitted having difficulty in solving the problem of passenger overcrowding in public transport to halt the spread of covid-19, mainly in the country’s large urban centres.
The statement was made by the sector’s deputy minister, Manuela Rebelo, during her recent visit to Cabo Delgado province.
“It is possible to meet the passenger capacity, but we have a lot of demand, we cannot neglect that. We have a lot of demand, but we have to do everything so that it is not by public transport that the contamination spreads”, she explained.
However, despite these obstacles, the Ministry of Transport and Communications considers it possible to comply with the basic health measures decreed by the State of Emergency.
The governor also shared that in large urban centres, such as Maputo and Beira, there are thousands of citizens looking for means of transport. To avoid the spread of the new coronavirus, the ministry in question has demanded “that vehicles be sanitized, passengers obey the rules by wearing the mask and measuring the temperature”.
This is a problem that affects the whole country. However, it becomes more serious in cities such as Beira, Maputo and Nampula.
