Hotels and Tourism Association Complains About Police Misbehaviour

The Association of Hotels and Tourism, in Nampula city, has complained about the alleged bad performance of Police officers of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), in monitoring the compliance of prevention measures of the new coronavirus in recommended by the health authorities.

The complaints were presented this week in the city, to the Secretary of State in Nampula province, Mety Gondola, during a meeting whose main objective was to assess the current level of compliance with the measures against covid-19 in the city’s hotels and restaurants.

Some members of the association said they had decided to lodge their complaints, as allegedly the behaviour of law and order elements is scaring away customers, at a time when the sector is grappling with the financial crisis arising from the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to hoteliers, PRM agents often carry out inspections alone in a restaurant, when, as a rule, they should accompany the elements of the National Inspection of Economic Activities (INAE).

The hotel and tourism operators said they have been collaborating with INAE, with which, they said, they have good working relations, particularly in the observance of preventive measures.

The spokesman for the PRM provincial command, Zacarias Nacuti, said that the corporation would continue to enforce the Covid-19 prevention measures, recommended by the country’s health authorities.

In his turn, Mety Gondola defended the need for a coordinated work between PRM and INAE, so that the supervision becomes efficient and does not cause constraints on both parts.

The Secretary of State said, however, that he is following with great concern that some restaurants, particularly in the city of Nampula, are being transformed into places of consumption of alcoholic drinks and with large agglomerations of people

“Therefore, we also want the hotel and tourism operators of our city and beyond, in the exercise of their activities, to contribute, in a decisive way, in the fight against this pandemic, observing and rigorously enforcing the prevention measures,” he appealed.
