Mozambique to Lead CPLP Parliamentary Assembly Focused on Peace and Inclusion

Mozambique is poised to assume the presidency of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (AP-CPLP) for a two-year mandate, reinforcing its commitment to peace and inclusive governance.

The handover will take place in Maputo during the 14th AP-CPLP meeting, scheduled from 14 to 15 July, according to Feliz Silva, spokesperson for the Standing Committee of the Mozambican Parliament.

Speaking to local media, Silva highlighted Mozambique’s intention to champion peace and inclusion as central pillars of its leadership. “We carry peace and inclusion as our banner — values that our country has always upheld,” he stated. “We are currently engaged in an inclusive national dialogue following post-electoral unrest, and we believe this is the culture we should share with other nations in the community.”

This mandate comes at a crucial time for Mozambique, which has faced challenges ranging from post-electoral tensions to ongoing efforts for national reconciliation. The leadership role is expected to elevate Mozambique’s diplomatic profile and position it as a model for conflict resolution and inclusive dialogue within the Lusophone bloc.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the CPLP is a vital platform for fostering parliamentary cooperation among its nine member states: Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Timor-Leste. The upcoming session will bring together several parliamentary presidents from these nations to discuss shared priorities and strengthen collaboration across the Lusophone world.

By holding the presidency, Mozambique aims to promote dialogue and exchange of best practices on governance, peace building, and regional development. The leadership also signals the country’s broader vision to share its lessons learned with fellow Portuguese-speaking countries, while continuing to build resilience at home.
