Exports from Portuguese-Speaking Countries to Macau Fall 3.5% in 2024

The export of goods from Portuguese-speaking countries to Macau decreased by 3.5% in 2024 compared to the previous year, according to data released on Monday, January 27. The total value exported from Portuguese-speaking markets to the territory amounted to 1.38 billion patacas (€164.1 million) in 2024, a 3.5% drop from the previous year, according to Macau’s Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).

The figure recorded in 2023—1.43 billion patacas (€170 million)—was the highest since the DSEC began collecting foreign trade data in 1998. Most of Macau’s trade with Portuguese-speaking countries in 2024 came from Brazil, totaling 1.06 billion patacas (€126 million), down 3.6% from the previous year.

Macau also imported goods worth 301.4 million patacas (€35.8 million) from Portugal, representing a 3.3% decrease compared to 2023.

Additionally, according to official data, the bloc of Portuguese-speaking countries purchased goods from Macau valued at 4.97 million patacas (€546,000) during the period under review, marking a 648% increase compared to 2023 (664,000 patacas, approximately €79,000).

Macau’s total export of goods amounted to 13.49 billion patacas (€1.6 billion) in 2024, a 1.1% year-on-year decrease. Meanwhile, the total value of imported goods reached 128.67 billion patacas (€15.29 billion), a reduction of 9% compared to the previous year, as reported by the DSEC.

Macau’s trade deficit stood at 115.2 billion patacas (€13.7 billion), a 10% improvement relative to 2023.
