Angola to Host the 15th CPLP Parliamentary Assembly in 2026

Angola will host the 15th meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (AP-CPLP) in 2026, the organization announced this Tuesday at the close of its two-day gathering in the Mozambican capital.

The decision was made public during the reading of the final communiqué of the 14th CPLP Parliamentary Assembly, which concluded on Tuesday in Maputo with renewed calls from delegates and parliamentary presidents to move forward with the full implementation of the mobility agreement within the Lusophone space and to prioritize peace as a foundation for development.

Mozambique officially assumed the rotating presidency of the AP-CPLP from Equatorial Guinea for a two-year term, pledging a focus on peace and inclusion.

“This is a journey that must be collective, where each country must take on its role to help the organization grow, promoting greater unity, cohesion, and joint efforts,” said Margarida Talapa upon assuming the presidency.

Talapa, who is also President of the Mozambican Assembly of the Republic, reaffirmed her commitment to strengthening democracy and the rule of law, and to monitoring the implementation of the CPLP mobility agreement. She also emphasized the importance of holding regular meetings to ensure the signing of agreements that facilitate free movement within the CPLP.

She further stated her intention to attract private investment through the harmonization of customs duties and tax policies among member countries, while promoting the Portuguese language and CPLP cultural heritage. Her agenda also includes revising the Assembly’s statutes and advancing gender equality.

In July 2024, Mozambique hosted the 13th ordinary session of the AP-CPLP, under the presidency of Teresa Efua Asangono, President of the Senate of Equatorial Guinea, a country that had faced challenges in organizing the annual event.

The 14th CPLP Parliamentary Assembly, which began on Monday, brought together over 100 delegates, including presidents of parliaments from the member states.

Founded in 1996, the CPLP includes nine member states: Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Timor-Leste.
