When its price rises, the impacts spread to transportation systems, food supply chains, and family budgets. Recent occurrences throughout the continent demonstrate how disruptive high diesel prices may be.
For example, in August alone, Angola’s government’s decision to increase diesel prices by more than 30% following subsidy termination sparked violent protests.
Protests in Luanda resulted in some deaths and dozens of arrests, demonstrating how fuel cost is inextricably linked to social stability.
On the other side of the continent, West Africa continues to rely heavily on diesel imports, with Russia and India accounting for a sizable portion of demand.
This dependency exposes the area to global market fluctuations.
The knock-on impact is inflation, which squeezes consumers whose earnings are already falling behind growing expenses.
The pattern is clear: high diesel prices raise transportation and production costs, fuel inflation, lower buying power, and, in extreme circumstances, spark political instability.
For governments, the challenge is combining budgetary sustainability with popular tolerance.

With that said, here are the African countries with the highest diesel cost in August, according to data from Global Petrolprices.
Compared to last month’s list, when the global average price of diesel was $1.22 per liter, compared to $1.23 per liter currently, the diesel prices for the Central African Republic, Cameroon, Guinea, and Senegal have reduced slightly.
While prices for Malawi, Zimbabwe, Seychelles, and Burundi increased. The price for Sierra Leone remained the same.
