South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has decreed the strengthening of preventive measures against covid-19 in South Africa at a time when the country has a total of 866 127 positive cases.
The Head of State addressed the nation on Monday (14) after the country identified 5163 new infections and harshly criticised the attitude of citizens who disregarded health protocols.
On the occasion, Ramaphosa considered that failure to comply with health protocols had led the country to enter the second wave of contamination, mainly affecting children and young people.
Speaking during the usual press conference to assess the data on covid-19 in the country, the South African Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize, underlined the new measures announced to reduce the transmission of the virus.
He urged citizens to choose “between life, illness or possibly death”.
Zweli Mkhize said on that occasion that the country currently registered a total of 23,415 deaths.
According to the minister, of the last 175 deaths, 93 took place in the Eastern Cape province, 32 in the Western Cape, 20 in the Northern Cape, 16 in the Free State, five in the North West, five in Kwazulu-Natal and four in Gauteng.
In terms of recoveries, Mkhize said that 762,746 people were free of the disease at a time when the country has 79,930 active cases.
