The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) has signalled its readiness to support Mozambique’s development priorities, which centre on energy, infrastructure, mining, agriculture, and trade corridors. The intention was announced following a meeting between ECA Executive Secretary Claver Gatete and President Daniel Chapo on Monday, 3 August.
During the audience, Claver Gatete said the ECA would align its technical cooperation with the government’s development strategy. According to the executive secretary, the objective is to strengthen support for sectors considered strategic to advancing the country’s economic growth.
‘We now have clear guidance on how to support Mozambique going forward,’ Gatete said at the close of the meeting. He added that he was honoured to have been received by President Chapo, noting that the audience had allowed him to ‘understand the direction and vision of the country.’
According to Gatete, the meeting identified the energy sector as a key priority, with particular emphasis on hydropower, the valorisation of natural resources, the gas industry, and the development of Cabo Delgado.
The priorities also include strengthening trade corridors. In this context, the Port of Beira was identified as a strategic infrastructure asset for regional trade, within the framework of the development vision presented by the government.
To support the realisation of these priorities, Gatete explained that the ECA intends to work in coordination with the broader United Nations system, the Mozambican government, and other development partners. The aim is to support the implementation of defined measures and contribute to the achievement of targets set by the executive.
‘We will continue to work with ministers and other partners to ensure we can deliver on the President’s vision for the people of Mozambique,’ Gatete added, reaffirming the ECA’s commitment to those priorities.
The ECA is one of the five regional commissions of the United Nations. The institution provides technical assistance to member states in the formulation of development policies, regional integration, industrialisation, trade, infrastructure, and sustainable development.
