Angolan President João Lourenço arrived in El Alamein, Egypt, on Friday to attend the AUDA-NEPAD Summit and the African Union's 8th Biannual Coordination Summit of the AU and Regional Economic Communities (RECs).
On Saturday, at the AUDA-NEPAD Summit — held concurrently with the Alamein Africa-GO63 Forum — Lourenço is scheduled to address the plenary session on the theme 'Africa's New Growth Compact in a Turbulent World'.
His address will follow the opening ceremony, at which Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Burundian President and current African Union Chairperson Évariste Ndayishimiye, and AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Youssouf are all expected to speak.
George Elombi, Chairman of the Board of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), and Nardos Bekele-Thomas, Executive Director of the African Union Development Agency – New Partnership for Africa's Development (AUDA-NEPAD), will also take the floor during Saturday's proceedings.
Nigerian business magnate and Dangote Group President and Chief Executive Aliko Dangote is also listed among the day's speakers.
The African Union formally endorsed Lourenço as Chair of the AUDA-NEPAD Heads of State and Government Orientation Committee (HSGOC) in February 2026, granting him a two-year mandate.
That election took place at the 39th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 14 and 15 February 2026 — the same occasion on which Évariste Ndayishimiye assumed the AU chairmanship for 2026.
In his additional capacity as AU Champion for Peace and National Reconciliation, Lourenço will participate on Sunday in the 8th Biannual Coordination Summit of the African Union, Regional Economic Communities and Regional Mechanisms.
The coordination summit serves, among other objectives, to harmonise policies and review the Division of Labour among AU member states, the Union itself, the RECs and Regional Mechanisms — a framework established by heads of state and government in January 2017 to advance the continent's integration agenda.
The Angolan president is accompanied to El Alamein by Minister of State for Economic Coordination José de Lima Massano, along with the ministers responsible for Foreign Affairs, Industry and Trade, Finance, and Planning.
Africa has eight Regional Economic Communities recognised by the African Union: the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), the East African Community (EAC), the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU), the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-SAD).
Angola's geographical position allows it to hold simultaneous membership of both SADC and ECCAS — two of the RECs formally recognised within the continental integration framework.
