Work on Temane Gas Refinery Begins in July

The construction works for the kitchen gas refinery and all the infrastructure for the production of this hydrocarbon in the areas adjacent to Pande-Temane, in Inhambane province, will start between next July and August.

Figures confirmed yesterday by the general manager of Sasol in Mozambique, Ouvídeo Rodolfo, indicate that in the execution phase the project may employ over 3,000 Mozambicans and thousands more indirectly.

This will be the first cooking gas refinery to be built based on the Pande and Temane gas exploration project. It is expected that the infrastructure can produce, annually, about thirty thousand tons of cooking gas capable of reducing imports by about 75%.

The construction of the refinery is part of the overall investment of more than 750 million dollars announced this week for the Temane Gas Project, following Sasol’s Final Investment Decision on February 19.

This is a project considered crucial for the economic development of Mozambique, taking into account its framework in the Government’s Five Year Plan 2020-2024, especially for the economic and social benefits it should generate during the implementation phase.

Moreover, in this line, the Government is committed to continue with actions aimed at enabling, in this five-year period, the sustainable exploitation of natural gas reserves that will open new paths for the development of the country.

The Government considers that the Final Investment Decision, recently taken, will allow for the start-up of actions aimed at exploiting the Inhassoro, Temane and Temane-Este gas reservoirs in the north of Inhambane province, the Temane Thermal Power Plant project, LPG (cooking gas) and light oil.

This project will allow the feasibility of the two structuring enterprises to be established in Inhambane province for the production of electricity and cooking gas.

Besides the implementation of the first LPG production unit in the country, in Temane, and the electricity generation project, still in this five-year period, the Government will be committed to the implementation of petrochemical industry units for the production of methanol and other derived fuels, as well as the production of fertilizers.
