Total Challenges Companies to Invest in Quality

The French oil company Total, which operates in Palma district, Cabo Delgado province, challenges Mozambican companies to invest in the quality of services at the level of multinationals’ requirements, in order to compete in the country’s oil and gas industry.

According to Total’s commercial director in the country, Alexandre Nhavotso, the oil and gas industry brings with it the quality component, a fact that represents a challenge for the Mozambican business sector.

This represents a challenge for the Mozambican business sector, especially for those operating in the agricultural and poultry sectors.

For the source, it makes no sense for the multinational to import food products, while there are Mozambican companies that can supply these products internally.

Speaking recently in Maputo, in a virtual conference for the presentation of the II edition of the business robustness index, Nhavotso said that the companies should
realize that there is an internationally recognized level of quality and strict compliance is required.

“We are going to need fresh produce every day. We are talking about vegetables
and vegetables. It doesn’t make sense to purchase everything. Importing means spending more money and if we have the flexibility to source domestically, every day, products like quality fresh tomatoes, we will have to bet on a Mozambican company.
But it must obey high quality standards”, assured Nhavotso.

During his intervention, Nhavotso indicated that businessmen should take
take into account that the quality referred to cannot be compared with that of the products that are consumed on a daily basis in the domestic market.

He said there are other factors that must be taken into account, from the seed that is
used, the freshness of the product, its transportation, among others.

“The tomato that reaches my table and satisfies me may not meet the demands of a
multinational. Therefore, the handling that is done from planting to harvesting are processes that internationally have a high level of demand,” he explained.

Data advanced by the source point out that Total employs more than six thousand workers in its logistics base and, gradually, this number should increase to 14 thousand during the peak production phase.

“The question is how to feed all these people,” he stressed.

One of the measures that has been highlighted in meetings on local content is the
need to empower national companies so that they can take gains from this project considered one of the largest liquefied natural gas projects in Africa.
