Sanha Connection Project Reaches First Gas

The project is expected to supply approximately 600 million standard cubic feet (MMSCF) of gas per day in the first quarter of this year, reaching full capacity of the CRX pipeline. This will enable the commercialization of gas stored over the years in the Sanha reservoir, ensuring the continuation of gas exports through the Angola LNG plant.

The National Agency of Petroleum, Gas, and Biofuels (ANPG) and its Block 0 associates, operated by Cabinda Gulf Oil Company (CABGOC), with partners Sonangol, Azule Energy, and TotalEnergies, announced the successful achievement of first gas in the Sanha Connection Project, the national concessionaire stated in a press release.

The Sanha Lean Gas Connection (SLGC) project, constructed in Benguela province, involves the installation of gas infrastructure. SLGC will allow the commercialization of gas stored in the Sanha reservoir and ensure the continuity of gas exports. This project includes designing and building a new platform integrated with existing Sanha facilities and the Congo River Connection Pipeline, enabling the transport of gas from the Sanha field to the Angola LNG liquefied natural gas plant.

According to the ANPG statement, with the commissioning of the Booster Compression (BC) module in the first quarter of 2025, Sanha will supply about 600 million standard cubic feet (MMSCF) of gas per day, reaching full capacity through the Congo River Connection Pipeline (CRX). This will facilitate the commercialization of gas stored in the Sanha reservoir, ensuring continued gas exports via the Angola LNG plant.

The first phase of Sanha will supply an additional 80 million MMSCF per day to the Angola LNG plant. The next project phase involves commissioning the Booster Compression (BC) module, adding 220 million MMSCF per day, enabling the CRX pipeline to reach its full capacity of 600 million MMSCF per day.

Data released by Chevron Angola in December indicates that current operations by Cabinda Gulf Oil Company (Chevron’s subsidiary in Angola) export 300 million MMSCF per day to Angola LNG through the Congo River Connection Pipeline.

In the statement, the Chairman of the National Concessionaire, Paulino Jerónimo, emphasized that this project results from policies introduced in the sector, which have stimulated investments to optimize, utilize, and commercialize natural gas.

“ANPG is working to increase gas production and supply, aiming to provide over one million cubic feet of gas per day to Angola LNG by 2027, compared to the 664 million cubic feet per day supplied in 2023,” he highlighted.

The General Manager of the Southern Africa Strategic Business Unit at Chevron, Billy Lacobie, noted that the first gas from this project demonstrates CABGOC’s success in maximizing the value of existing resources in Block 0.

“The Sanha project aims to contribute to gas supply from the Sanha field in Block 0 to the Soyo and Angola LNG plants, acting as a hub that will facilitate the commercialization of stored gas in the Sanha reservoir and the continuation of gas exports. As a long-term partner, Chevron boasts 70 years of operational excellence in Angola and remains committed to providing reliable, affordable, and low-carbon energy,” stated Billy Lacobie.
