Electric mobility in Luanda has taken a further step forward with the inauguration of a battery charging point for electric motorbikes at the Mirantes fuel station in Talatona. The facility is the product of a pioneering partnership between Sonangol Distribuição e Comercialização (Sonangol DC) and ANDA, an Angolan urban mobility and asset-financing startup.

The project sits within Sonangol’s broader decarbonisation and energy diversification strategy, which has increasingly focused on upgrading its network of fuel stations. The Mirantes site was in fact the first station to reopen under the company’s Optimal Supply Network Requalification and Modernisation Programme — a refurbishment that already included a dedicated charging zone for electric vehicles. The partnership with ANDA deepens that offering by adding a point designed specifically for electric motorbike batteries.

ANDA was founded in Luanda in 2022 by Sérgio Tati and Joerg Nuehrmann. The mobility and fintech company has been working to formalise Angola’s motorcycle-taxi sector — a market that employs an estimated 1.2 million riders nationwide, roughly 600,000 of them in the capital alone. Operating a drive-to-own asset-financing model, ANDA supplies motorbikes, tuk-tuks and light vehicles to drivers who typically lack bank accounts, credit histories or insurance coverage, gradually integrating them into the formal economy. The company has also been expanding its electric fleet and its associated battery-swap and charging network, an effort that recently attracted investment from Proparco, the development finance arm of France’s Agence Française de Développement.

The new infrastructure at the Mirantes station adds to that expanding network, reinforcing both companies’ commitment to sustainability and to adapting Luanda’s urban infrastructure to new technological demands — promoting cleaner and more efficient transport solutions for the thousands of motorbike riders who today underpin much of the city’s mobility.
