Angola’s state electricity producer PRODEL has announced it will restore 13 failed generators at the Chibodo Thermal Power Station in Cabinda province by September, after the units sat idle for three months.
Pedro Afonso, chairman of PRODEL’s board of directors, told reporters on Friday that of the 18 generator sets that make up the Chibodo plant — which has an installed capacity of 30.8 megawatts — only five are currently operational.
Afonso said PRODEL has already procured the necessary circuit breakers, protection panels and other spare parts, which are expected to arrive in Cabinda within days and will be used to repair the 13 units, each with an individual capacity of 1.7 megawatts.
He said the overriding objective is to ensure that households have access to reliable, quality electricity supply.
The primary electricity generation infrastructure in Cabinda province is the Malembo Thermal Power Station, which has an installed capacity of 145 megawatts but is currently supplying only 85 megawatts due to technical constraints.
