The Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy assures that it has funds to make 400 thousand new electrical connections possible until the end of the year. Since the beginning of the year, according to data provided to “Notícias”, 63 thousand new connections have been made.
A source from the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy did not refer to the costs involved in this work, but considers that the accomplishment of the goal for this year is an important step for the achievement of the objectives outlined by the Government in the Energy for All program.
He indicated that, to accelerate the electrification, contributes, among several measures, the elimination since the end of last year of the fee charged to applicants for new domestic connections of electricity from the national grid.
In fact, as was explained at the time, with the removal of the electricity connection fee, one of the biggest barriers to access to electricity for the majority of the Mozambican population was eliminated, which also brought immediate economic benefits in household income through savings of about three thousand meticais that were charged for energy connection.
The initiative also opened the way for at least two million new connections (benefiting more than 10 million people) to be made by 2024, covering all the administrative posts, in an investment of about $500 million by the Government and partners.
In the same framework, the electricity coverage rate is expected to go from the current 34 to 64% by 2024.
