Angola's national electricity distributor ENDE plans to connect 105,000 families in the Vila-Flor neighbourhood of Kilamba Kiaxi municipality to the public power grid for the first time this year, as part of the country's ongoing National Electricity Network Expansion Project.
Lauro Fortunato, ENDE's executive administrator for the Luanda and North Region, disclosed the figures to journalists on the sidelines of the 41st Angola International Trade Fair (FILDA 2026), currently being held in Icolo e Bengo province.
According to Fortunato, the project entails the construction of a new electrical substation and the installation of 48 transformer stations, designed to bring the largest possible number of households into the public energy network.
Fortunato said the project is at an advanced stage and assured reporters that public electricity would reach multiple Vila-Flor families within days.
In his assessment, the commissioning of a dedicated electrical substation in Vila-Flor could also serve as a catalyst for local economic development and attract new residents to the area.
The ENDE official also highlighted the electrification of the Mussulo municipality in Luanda province, achieved through the installation of a submarine cable that carries power from the National Grid — along with fibre-optic connectivity — to the peninsula, describing it as a historic project.
Fortunato reiterated that the government is committed to extending electricity access to all Angolan households through a series of major structural projects currently under way across the country.
ENDE data show that 48 percent of Angola's population currently has access to electricity, underscoring the scale of the challenge still facing the sector.
The executive administrator confirmed that the rollout of 1.27 million prepayment meters nationwide is under way, a programme he said would run concurrently with the grid expansion efforts.
He argued that the prepayment meter programme would not only improve ENDE's revenue collection but also ensure that customers pay precisely for the electricity they consume, reducing commercial losses.
ENDE has already installed more than 300,000 prepayment meters across the provinces of Huíla, Malanje, Zaire, Luanda, Namibe, Cunene and Benguela, Fortunato noted.
On a separate matter, the official condemned the ongoing vandalism of electrical infrastructure in various parts of the country.
Fortunato warned that the destruction of electrical equipment leaves thousands of families without power and disrupts essential social and economic services.
