Puzzlewood covers about five hectares of ancient forest and features geological formations known as scowles, the result of natural processes and mining activities. These structures create uneven terrain, narrow passages, and cavities that make the trail surprising at every turn. The landscape of Puzzlewood thus combines natural and historical elements, including traces of ancient mining operations dating back to the Roman period. The winding paths, created in the 19th century, allow visitors to explore this unique environment, full of peculiar rock formations, small caves, and lush vegetation.
The uniqueness of the place has made it a favorite setting for major productions such as Star Wars, Doctor Who, and Merlin. The combination of filtered light, thick moss, and rock formations creates a naturally cinematic environment that reinforces the legendary aura of Puzzlewood. It is believed that J. R. R. Tolkien also found inspiration here for the forests of Middle-earth, something easy to imagine when walking along the moss-covered paths and intertwined roots.
The main trail is about a mile long and is accessible to anyone who is comfortable with uneven terrain and stairs. Suitable footwear is recommended, as the ground can be slippery. Due to the nature of the terrain, baby strollers and dogs are not allowed. In addition to the forest, there are small areas with animals, a wicker maze, and outdoor spaces for families, making the visit suitable for all ages.
How to visit Puzzlewood
To visit Puzzlewood, fly to London or Bristol. From London, you can take the train to Gloucester or Lydney and then take a bus or taxi to Coleford, the nearest town. From Bristol, the drive to Puzzlewood takes about an hour, making it a practical option for those who prefer to rent a car. The wood is located south of Coleford on the B4228 road, with clear signage for visitors.
