Assets under management in Angola's pension fund industry reached 1.33 trillion kwanzas in the second half of 2026, a year-on-year increase of approximately 9%, the country's insurance and securities regulator disclosed on Friday.

The figure was announced in Luanda by Aldemiro Gonçalves, a board member of the Angolan Insurance and Securities Supervision and Regulation Agency (ARSEG), speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the third edition of the Pension Fund Forum.

Gonçalves said the total surpasses the 1.25 trillion kwanzas recorded in 2025, underscoring sustained expansion across the sector. He noted that quarter-on-quarter growth stood at around 2%, with industry indicators pointing upward across all metrics — from assets under management to the number of funds active in the market. "We are talking about 11 open pension funds, and in terms of participants, the industry currently has just over 63,000 members across pension funds," he said.

Of the 46 funds currently in operation, 35 are closed funds — each linked to a single employer, a single company or a single professional group — while only 11 are open funds accessible to a broader pool of contributors. Closed funds account for 96.63% of all assets managed by the sector, with open funds representing the remaining 3.37%.

The number of funds itself has grown significantly: the sector counted 41 pension funds in 2025, rising to 46 at present. Gonçalves signalled that expansion is set to continue. "That number is likely to grow further. We are confident in that assessment because there are already five or six pension fund formation processes currently awaiting publication in the Official Gazette," he said.

On the benefits side, pension funds paid out approximately 135.7 billion kwanzas in 2025, a rise of nearly 15% on the previous year, with old-age pensions accounting for 88% of that total.

The third edition of the Pension Fund Forum was held under the theme 'How to Scale Up Retirement Savings?' The event, organised by Revista Economia e Mercado, brought together national and international specialists to debate strategies for diversifying revenue streams and encouraging retirement savings. Discussions centred on financial inclusion, financial literacy, trust-building and the development of savings solutions tailored to the diverse circumstances of Angolan workers and companies.
