Minister Mário Oliveira Highlights Impact of Telecommunications on the Oil Industry

The Minister of Telecommunications, Information Technologies, and Social Communication, Mário Oliveira, highlighted this Wednesday in Luanda the impact of telecommunications on the development of Angola’s oil industry.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 6th Edition of the Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition, the minister noted that his sector operates an application, Tecnoecologia, which has collaborated with the National Oil and Gas Agency (ANPG) for over three years in monitoring and detecting oil spills in offshore operations.

He also confirmed that, in partnership with the ANPG, they are in the second phase of developing a platform for mapping the country’s onshore oil exploration basins.

“Therefore, the presence and impact of telecommunications are evident, significantly contributing to the development of Angola’s oil industry,” he emphasized.

The minister stressed the essential role of new technologies in the national oil sector, noting that telecommunications and information technologies are crucial tools across all spheres of human activity—social, political, and economic.

He highlighted their presence at the Oil and Gas symposium and exhibition, particularly through the National Space Program Management Office (GGPN), which presents satellite-based solutions already proving highly useful in the oil industry.

Additionally, he mentioned that the sector established GEDAI, an office dedicated to developing customized applications supporting various industries, including oil, agriculture, mining, and urban planning.

Partnerships

Mário Oliveira underscored GEDAI’s partnerships with the operator Africell, noting that the telecommunications and IT sector benefits from legislative convergence, enabling the sharing of passive infrastructure among operators.

He also recalled the recent partnership to build another submarine fiber-optic cable connecting Cabinda, aiming to expand connectivity and optimize existing infrastructure.

He emphasized that such partnerships are constant and essential for the development and expansion of telecommunications services nationwide.

Startups

Oliveira highlighted the growing vibrancy of the startup ecosystem, with many young people creating job opportunities for peers. “This trajectory has been consistent. The oil sector offers significant opportunities for these young entrepreneurs, and we have already identified concrete examples of such collaboration,” the minister said.

He added that meritocracy, creativity, and development are strongly present among the youth. “Therefore, the oil sector certainly cannot and should not remain detached from the innovation generated by our young entrepreneurs.”
