Portuguese Startup Presents Device That Reduces Hotel Water Consumption by Up to 60%

Savearth, a Portuguese startup focused on sustainability and technology for the hospitality sector, has developed “the first smart device capable of measuring water consumption” during showers and rewarding guests for more sustainable behavior.

Called Eco Shower, the equipment uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) and sound frequency analysis to inform guests about their consumption habits – the more efficient the shower, the greater the reward.

Initial tests were conducted at the PortoBay Teatro hotel and the Palácio do Governador, where the device achieved water savings of 46% and 48%, respectively. According to Tnews, this success has already sparked interest from over 50 hotels in Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Dubai. The Eco Shower can generate water savings of up to 60% for showers.

“Sustainability is no longer a moral issue, but essential — it is no longer an ‘extra’ but a true business priority. In the hospitality sector, the main challenge is reducing environmental impact without compromising the guest experience. As the sector has matured in this area, real change only happens with guest engagement,” explained John Blandy, Sustainability Director of the PortoBay group.

On average, a hotel guest may use about 120 liters of water per shower, far exceeding the 40 to 80 liters used in a quick shower at home. For a hotel with around 150 rooms, adopting this technology “can represent an opportunity to generate annual savings of up to 100,000 euros in water and energy” related to water consumption during showers and water heating.

“This methodology combines independent evidence from academic and industry studies with an innovative approach that ensures credibility and tangible results for hotels,” stated João Machado, CEO of Savearth.
