Angola's government investment in technology infrastructure — including a national data centre and the .ao domain system — will strengthen the country's defences against cyberattacks, Secretary of State for Social Communication Nuno Caldas Albino said on Friday in Luanda.
Speaking during the fourth legislative session of the fifth legislature, Caldas Albino said that as the world becomes increasingly digitalised, institutions ranging from telecoms operators to banks are growing more vulnerable to cyber threats, making it imperative to reinforce policies that guarantee digital protection.
His remarks came in the wake of a hacking incident that struck Unitel, Angola's largest mobile operator, in the early hours of last Tuesday. Caldas Albino said the company responded decisively once the breach was detected.
"What happened with Unitel — the legitimate response was for the company to activate its data prevention and preservation mechanisms as soon as the attack was registered," he said.
