A tablet with a micro-camera installed will be distributed by the English National Health Service (NHS). The aim is to detect intestinal diseases such as Crohn’s and the presence of possible cancer cells.
According to Portugal’s Correio da Manhã, the tablet has a device with the ability to record two pictures per second as it travels through the digestive system. Thus, it allows doctors to make the diagnosis in a few hours.
The newspaper indicates that specialists guarantee that it costs 500 pounds (about 50 thousand meticais), is “very effective and saves patients from an uncomfortable examination.
Peter Johnson, clinical director of the NHS, stresses the importance of the new method.
“We know that there are people who suffer from symptoms, such as stomach pain and bloating or blood in the stool, and they don’t show up,” he points out.
Now, the new pills can help reduce waiting times and detect the disease early, when it is easier to treat.
