Minister Highlights Technological Modernization Over the Last 50 Years

Angola’s Minister of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication, Mário Oliveira, stated this Thursday in Luanda that over the past 50 years, the sector has kept pace with global technological developments and modernized its regulatory system.

Speaking at the opening of the Angolan International Forum on Information and Communication Technologies (ANGOTIC 2025), the minister explained that as a result of this modernization, the liberalization of the telecommunications market began in 2000, with the emergence of the first private telecom operators.

He noted that this transformation also led to the installation of terrestrial fiber optic and microwave networks, which connect the country’s main cities to the world, supported by the National Space Program and a strong focus on the training of local professionals.

He emphasized the creation of telecommunications infrastructure capable of serving the needs of the economy and citizens’ daily lives.

“We now have access networks that support internet banking, telemedicine, distance learning, and a strong government commitment to administrative modernization, digital transformation, and improving the lives of citizens,” he stated.

According to the minister, the country is now working toward expanding and improving its telecom infrastructure, including the implementation of Digital Terrestrial Television, which will mark a new era for the national television and radio networks, ensuring higher-quality public services.

The minister also highlighted that the participation of companies and startups in the event reflects the increasing importance of the forum as a platform for showcasing Angola’s creative potential.

Promoted by the Government of Angola, through the Ministry of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication, ANGOTIC aims to discuss global and future ICT topics, while encouraging knowledge exchange and networking among government bodies, exhibitors, and experts.

Running until June 14, the forum hosts 105 companies (including four foreign), 180 startups from the provinces of Luanda, Bié, Huíla, Huambo, Namibe, and Uíge, and is expected to attract 20,000 visitors—double the attendance of the previous edition.

Held under the theme: “50 years – Communicating, Modernizing, and Developing Angola”, the event will cover key topics such as “Connectivity”, “Artificial Intelligence”, “Digital DNA”, “Cybersecurity”, “Bridging the Digital Divide”, “Use of Satellites in Precision Agriculture”, and “AI and Automation in Business”, among others.

Key speakers include Angola’s Minister Mário Oliveira, Namibia’s Minister of ICT Emma Theofelus, Zimbabwe’s Minister D. Aphuti, and John Omo, Secretary-General of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU), along with other specialists.

The forum’s opening ceremony was presided over by the Minister of State for Economic Coordination, José de Lima Massano.
