How M-Pesa, Revolut and Nubank Became Fintech Titans in Emerging and Developed Markets

In a world rapidly shifting towards digital finance, three fintech leaders—Nubank, Revolut, and M-Pesa—have carved out dominant positions in their respective regions by radically redefining what financial services can look like.

Each of these platforms is on a journey to become a financial super app, yet their approaches—and victories—are as varied as their home markets.

Nubank, with over 120 million users in Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia, leads Latin America’s fintech revolution by simplifying banking in a region long plagued by complexity and mistrust. Its revenue—estimated at $8 billion in 2023—comes primarily from high-margin consumer loans and credit card fees, giving it a healthy ARPU of $67. With a valuation nearing $50 billion, Nubank’s core proposition lies in transparency, digital efficiency, and strong mobile-first engagement.

In Europe, Revolut has taken a very different path. With 50 million users, its strength lies in international FX transactions, crypto services, stock trading, and subscription-based offerings. Generating around $2.2 billion in revenue, with an ARPU of $44, Revolut has become the go-to app for cross-border financial lifestyles. Its valuation hovers between $33 and $45 billion, and expansion into Africa signals its ambition to globalise its super app offering.

Africa’s fintech crown jewel, M-Pesa, champions mobile money in regions where banking infrastructure remains scarce. Operating in Kenya, Tanzania, Egypt, and Mozambique, M-Pesa serves 70 million users, earning most of its $1.5 billion in revenue from domestic transaction fees. While its ARPU trails behind at $21, M-Pesa’s real value lies in its deep financial inclusion, enabling millions to pay, borrow, and transfer funds securely.

Despite differing monetisation models—interest-based (Nubank), FX and subscriptions (Revolut), and transaction fees (M-Pesa)—all three platforms are reshaping traditional banking. They offer compelling lessons for how technology can democratise finance in both emerging and mature economies.
