The Mozambican State exceeded the tax collection targets by collecting 235.70 billion Meticais against 214 billion Meticais foreseen in the 2020 rectification budget.
According to Augusto Tacarindua, director general of the Office of Planning, Studies and International Cooperation of the Tax Authority (AT), the revenue budget for last year underwent some changes as a result of the impact of natural disasters, namely cyclones Idai and Kenneth and the covid-19 pandemic.
Accordingly, the initial budget approved was 244 billion Meticals, however the State revised it downwards to 235 billion Meticals.
Over the course of the year, the consequences of covid-19 on the economy’s graphs, and consequently on the fiscal pointers, forced the Mozambican state to fine-tune expectations and once again revise the budget to 214 billion Meticais.
Tacarindua explained that this latest revision was necessary because there were technical aspects that showed trends according to which the achievement of 235 billion was in doubt.
In his explanation, the covid-19 pandemic led to restrictive measures that culminated in periodic restructuring of the revenue collection system as well as limiting the movement of goods along the borders, including periods of total closure.
