During the first three months of 2026, Angola’s 20 commercial banks operating at the time generated combined daily profits of AOA 2.81 billion, equivalent to approximately US$3.09 million. The Banco Angolano de Investimentos (BAI) remained the most profitable institution in the financial system, accounting for around 25% of the banking sector’s daily earnings.

BAI reaffirmed its leadership in the Angolan financial system by recording the highest daily profit among domestic commercial banks during the first quarter of 2026. Over the period, the bank generated AOA 690.74 million (US$756,560) per day, consolidating its position as the institution with the strongest daily earnings capacity in the national market, after holding the same position in the previous financial year.
The scale of this performance becomes even more striking when compared to the results of smaller institutions. For example, BAI’s daily profit was close to the total profit earned over three months by Banco de Negócios Internacional (BNI), a non-systemically important bank. During the same period, BNI posted a net profit of AOA 890.24 million (US$975,070), only 22.41% higher than the amount BAI generated, on average, in a single day of operations.
In absolute terms, the difference between BAI’s daily profit and BNI’s quarterly profit was just AOA 199.50 million (US$218,510). The figures show that BNI’s entire first-quarter net profit was equivalent to little more than one day of profits at BAI.
Second place in the ranking of banks with the highest daily profits was occupied by Banco de Fomento Angola (BFA). The institution earned AOA 644.65 million (US$706,080) per day during the first quarter of the year. Despite the strong result, this represented a decline of 9.86% compared to the AOA 715.19 million (US$783,340) generated daily during the same period in 2025.
Third place went to Standard Bank Angola, which achieved a daily profit of AOA 413.40 million (US$452,780). Unlike the two largest banks in the system, the institution recorded profit growth, with earnings increasing by 11% compared to the AOA 373.22 million (US$408,780) generated daily in the first quarter of the previous year.
Despite a slight slowdown of 1.27%, Banco Keve remained among the sector’s most profitable institutions, ranking fourth. The bank’s daily profit declined marginally from AOA 227.46 million (US$249,140) in the first three months of 2025 to AOA 224.57 million (US$245,970) during the same period in 2026.
The top five ranking was completed by Banco de Comércio e Indústria (BCI), which recorded one of the sector’s strongest performances. The bank generated daily profits of AOA 202.44 million (US$221,730), representing growth of 49.94% compared to the AOA 135.01 million (US$147,880) earned during the first quarter of 2025.
Most Profitable Smaller Banks
Among Angola’s smaller banking institutions, Banco Caixa Geral Angola (BCGA) stood out as the most profitable, recording daily profits of AOA 132.75 million (US$145,540) between January and March 2026, a 6.64% increase compared to the same period in 2025.
It was followed by Banco de Crédito do Sul (BCS), which achieved daily profits of AOA 90.92 million (US$99,680), representing growth of 56.76%—one of the highest rates among non-systemic banks. In the same period of 2025, the bank’s daily profits stood at AOA 58 million (US$63,600).
Banco da China ranked third among the most profitable non-systemic banks after increasing its daily earnings by 35.43%. The institution improved from daily profits of AOA 55.99 million (US$58,100) in the first quarter of 2025 to AOA 71.77 million (US$78,690) during the same period this year.
The ranking of non-systemic banks with the highest daily profits was completed by Banco de Investimento Rural (BIR). During the first three months of 2026, the institution generated daily profits of AOA 48.37 million (US$53,030), up from AOA 41.98 million (US$46,030) in the corresponding period of the previous year, representing growth of 15.23%.
