BAI Positions Itself as Angola’s Financial Gateway at Sibos 2026 in Miami

Banco Angolano de Investimentos (BAI) used its participation in Sibos 2026 in Miami to deepen Angola’s ties with the international financial community and showcase investment and trade opportunities in the Angolan market, at a moment when the banking sector is undergoing rapid transformation driven by digitalisation, artificial intelligence and new payments technology.

The bank participated as an exhibitor at the flagship annual conference of the global financial industry, held from 28 September to 1 October at the Miami Beach Convention Center, with a stand at position L58. Sibos organisers listed BAI among the official exhibitors for this year’s edition.

Under the theme ‘Digital finance for AI-driven economies’, Sibos 2026 put the evolution of digital finance, artificial intelligence, cross-border payments, financial system interoperability, technological innovation and the sector’s capacity to meet new global economic demands at the centre of its agenda.

For BAI, the presence in Miami carried a dimension that extended well beyond institutional visibility. The bank positioned itself as a bridge between international investors, companies and financial institutions and the opportunities available in Angola, seeking to create the conditions for business development and strategic partnerships.

In its communications throughout the event, BAI presented itself as the ‘financial gateway to Angola’, highlighting its role in bringing the Angolan market closer to the international financial community. The institution referenced opportunities linked to investment, trade and the development of Angola’s broader financial ecosystem.

This strategy places the bank at the centre of one of the key questions facing the Angolan economy: the need to deepen the country’s integration into international financial circuits and facilitate engagement between domestic companies and foreign partners.

The conference also gave BAI the opportunity to establish direct contacts with global financial institutions, companies and other strategic partners. At the close of the event, the bank reported having held more than 50 meetings, which the institution described as significant for the development of future relationships and partnerships.

According to BAI’s post-event assessment, the meetings held during the conference covered matters related to the group’s operations in Angola, Cabo Verde and Portugal, opening the way for deeper engagement with counterparts in the weeks ahead.

The bank noted that a significant proportion of processes initiated at international forums of this nature have a medium- to long-term horizon, given that relationships between financial institutions, correspondent banks and potential partners are built and refined over time.

The participation therefore carries strategic weight for BAI’s corporate and investment banking activities, particularly in a context where Angolan companies are seeking greater access to international markets and foreign investors require local partners capable of navigating the country’s economic and financial environment.

BAI’s focus on the investment-trade axis is especially pertinent for an economy such as Angola’s, which is working to diversify its sources of growth and increase private-sector participation.

By bringing together international financial institutions, technology companies and operators active in trade and payments within a single forum, Sibos also provides a platform to discuss mechanisms aimed at making cross-border operations more efficient.

In that context, the transformation of international payments represents one of the defining trends in the financial industry. Swift, the organiser of Sibos, has consistently emphasised the need for faster, more interoperable and more resilient financial systems, keeping pace with technological change and the growing application of artificial intelligence.

For Angola, these shifts have a direct impact on companies engaged in international trade, which depend on efficient mechanisms to make payments, receive foreign revenue, finance operations and maintain relationships with suppliers and clients across different markets.

Technology is increasingly a factor of competitiveness for Angolan banks, and BAI’s presence in Miami coincided with a period of particularly intense technological transformation across the banking industry.

Artificial intelligence, automation, cybersecurity and the digitalisation of financial services were among the principal themes at Sibos 2026. The conference sought to examine how these technologies are reshaping the way banks and other financial institutions deliver services, manage risk and engage with clients.

For BAI, keeping pace with these trends represents not merely a technological challenge but a competitive imperative. Direct contact with international banks and specialised firms provides exposure to solutions, business models and practices that could influence the evolution of financial services available in the Angolan market.

The institution framed its presence at Sibos squarely in terms of the need to strengthen relationships with strategic partners and identify new opportunities for collaboration and growth.

BAI’s participation gains additional significance because Sibos serves as a platform where banks from across the globe discuss shared challenges facing the financial industry.

By bringing its proposition and its experience in the Angolan market to Miami, the bank sought to raise the country’s profile among institutions with the capacity to establish correspondent banking relationships, finance trade, support investment operations and develop solutions for companies with international activities.

The conference thus allowed BAI to pursue two objectives simultaneously: tracking the transformation of the global financial industry and promoting Angola as a market for investment and trade.

In its assessment of the participation, the bank characterised the results as positive and productive, noting that the more than 50 meetings held provide a foundation for future partnerships and initiatives.

Sibos 2026 marked the first time the conference has been held in Miami, a city that Swift presents as a gateway to Latin America and an internationally connected financial hub.

For BAI, participation in the event represents, in that context, more than attendance at an international conference: it constitutes an opportunity to link capital, companies and international institutions to the opportunities available in Angola, reinforcing the bank’s role in integrating the country into the global financial system.
