Angola and Japan identified new opportunities to deepen bilateral cooperation on Tuesday in New York, with discussions covering strategic planning, public investment management, infrastructure, technological innovation and sustainable development.
The talks took place on the sidelines of the United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), where Angola’s Secretary of State for Planning, Luís Epalanga, met with Japan’s Minister of State, Tsuji Kiyoto.
According to a press note issued by Angola’s Embassy in the United States and sent to the state news agency ANGOP, Epalanga highlighted the friendship and cooperation ties between the two countries, which were established five decades ago.
He acknowledged Japan’s contribution to Angola’s development through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), citing its work across health, education, infrastructure, water supply, transport and institutional capacity-building.
Epalanga presented the priorities set out in Angola’s National Development Plan and advocated for a deepened partnership with Japan through the creation of a formal institutional cooperation framework spanning strategic planning, public investment management, public policy evaluation, public-private partnerships and institutional development.
The secretary of state also called for an expansion of technical cooperation, broader capacity-building and training programmes, and greater participation by Japanese private-sector companies in investment projects across energy, agriculture, logistics, manufacturing, critical minerals, the digital economy and urban development.
Epalanga reaffirmed Angola’s commitment to the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), describing it as a strategic instrument for promoting investment, technological innovation and human capital development across the African continent.
At the close of the meeting, both sides expressed their intention to deepen political dialogue and consolidate a partnership centred on sustainable development, investment and shared prosperity.
