Medicine at UPRA Has The Highest Tuition Fees Among Universities in The Country

The upcoming academic year will weigh heavily on the wallets of students at private universities, with tuition fees permitted to rise by 20.74%. However, not all institutions implemented the increase. UPRA will charge the highest tuition, while ISPA will be the cheapest institution to study at. Fees vary depending on the course and the time of day.

The Private University of Angola (UPRA) will be the most expensive institution in the 2025/2026 academic year, with tuition exceeding 200,000 Kz/month, according to data gathered by Expansão from the updated fee schedules of twenty private higher education institutions. For the medicine program, UPRA will charge students 253,368 Kz per month. Indeed, medicine is the most expensive course in private education, although there is a significant gap compared to the Jean Piaget University, which charges 90,000 Kz/month for the same program. Among the other high tuition fees found by Expansão are those charged by the Methodist University for Clinical Analysis and Public Health, as well as Architecture and Urbanism, at 91,037 Kz/month.

It should be recalled that universities were authorized to increase tuition fees and other charges by 20.74%, in line with year-on-year inflation for May, as permitted by Joint Executive Decree No. 187/23 of September 1. In reality, most institutions did apply increases.

In its survey, Expansão identified the ten most expensive higher education institutions in the country for the 2025/2026 academic year, using tuition costs as the sole criterion, calculating an average between the lowest and highest fees across available courses. Leading the ranking is the Private University of Angola (UPRA), with an average tuition of 159,000 Kz, followed by the Methodist University of Angola (UMA) with an average of 78,000 Kz, and Óscar Ribas University (UOR), which completes the “top 3” of the most expensive universities.

Continuing with the same methodology, Jean Piaget University (Uni Piaget) follows with 64,000 Kz, Lusíada University of Angola (ULA) with 62,000 Kz, the Technical University of Angola (UTANGA) with 54,000 Kz, the Catholic University of Angola (UCAN) with 49,000 Kz, Belas University (UniBelas) with 47,000 Kz, the Polytechnic Institute of Technologies and Sciences (ISPTEC) with 47,000 Kz, and the Higher Institute of Social Sciences and International Relations (CIS) with 45,000 Kz.

Not limiting the analysis to the most expensive institutions, Expansão also identified the universities and institutes with the lowest tuition fees for the upcoming academic year. The cheapest courses can be found at the Higher Technical School of Sports Sciences, where, with the exception of Physiotherapy, tuition is 21,200 Kz/month for afternoon classes. Other institutions also adopt lower afternoon tuition fees to make higher education more accessible to students with fewer financial resources. This is the case at IMETRO, where tuition for afternoon courses is 28,000 Kz, compared to nearly 39,000 Kz for morning classes.

Applying the same criteria mentioned above, the Polytechnic Institute Atlântida (ISPA) has the lowest average tuition fee at 23,000 Kz, followed by the Higher Technical School of Sports Sciences (ESCID) at 24,000 Kz, and the Polytechnic Institute Kalandula (ISPEKA), which completes the “top 3” of the cheapest higher education institutions in the country.

The list continues with slightly higher tuition averages at the Technical Institute of Angola (ISTA) with 33,000 Kz, Gregório Semedo University (UGS) with 34,000 Kz, the Polytechnic Institute of Cazenga (ISPOCA) with 35,000 Kz, the Polytechnic Institute Katangonji (ISPK) with 35,000 Kz, the Metropolitan Institute (IMETRO) with 37,000 Kz, the International Polytechnic Institute of Angola (ISIA) with 41,000 Kz, and the Independent University of Angola (UNIA) with 43,000 Kz.
