Endiama Mining Implements Environmental Protection Education in Mining Areas

Endiama Mining, a subsidiary of Endiama E.P, continues to strengthen environmental protection in the country’s mining areas through the “Socioenvironmental – Small Actions, Big Transformations” program, launched in November 2024 in the provinces of Lunda-Norte and Luanda.

According to Endiama Mining’s General Director, Pedro Galiano, the project aims to raise awareness among adolescents about the environmental measures that should be taken in Angola’s mining activities to prevent ecological damage for future generations.

In a recent statement to ANGOP, the director explained that the project targets adolescents between 12 and 16 years old, as they represent the future managers and leaders of Angola’s mining industry. This age group is ideal for instilling environmental principles and educating them on sustainable practices.

The program is divided into two components: “Planet in Our Hands Project” and “Eco Soap Workshop”.

  • The first component is aimed at 12 to 15-year-olds, offering environmental education classes and recreational activities designed in a child-friendly language.
  • The second component is intended for individuals aged 16 and older and focuses on reusing materials consumed in diamond mines, such as used vegetable oil, which is transformed into eco-friendly soap.

Beyond recycling harmful materials, the program also provides company employees and other participants with basic entrepreneurship skills, according to Pedro Galiano.

The Endiama Mining initiative is supported by the Brilhante Foundation (Endiama E.P’s social arm), other industry companies, provincial governments, the Ministry of Environment, and school boards in mining areas.

Expansion Plans

In its first phase, the Socioenvironmental program will be implemented over one year in Lunda-Norte and Lunda-Sul, the regions with the highest diamond mining activity. The initiative is expected to expand to other provinces such as Malanje and Huambo.

Alongside this program, in October 2024, Endiama Mining announced an investment of $40 million over the past five years in geological prospecting for three mining projects in Lunda-Norte, creating at least 600 jobs for young people.

Founded in 2012, Endiama Mining is the operational arm of Endiama E.P. and has been headquartered in Dundo, Lunda-Norte, since April 2021.
