Cholera continues to spread across Angola, with 337 new cases and seven deaths reported in the last 24 hours. The province of Benguela remains the epicenter of the disease, which has now spread to 17 of Angola’s 21 provinces.
Of the 337 new cholera cases, 132 were reported in Benguela, followed by Cuanza Sul (70), Luanda (50), Malanje (41), Cuanza Norte (19), Huíla (9), Bengo (6), Namibe (5), Icolo e Bengo (4), and Huambo (1).
During this period, seven people died, and another 638 remain hospitalized with cholera.
Since the beginning of the outbreak, a cumulative total of 16,719 cases and 558 deaths have been reported.
The disease is linked to poor hygiene, inadequate sanitation, and limited access to clean water. Additionally, heavy rains and flooding in affected areas have contaminated water sources and accelerated the spread of cholera, particularly in densely populated regions.
Cholera is an acute infectious disease caused by the Vibrio cholerae bacterium. It leads to severe diarrhea and vomiting, which can quickly result in extreme dehydration and death if not treated promptly.
