Angola Seeks to Strengthen Its Position in the Global Diamond Market

The Angolan government, through the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Petroleum and Gas and ENDIAMA EP, has been implementing policies to improve operational efficiency, aiming to increase production levels and strengthen its position in the global diamond market.

In 2024, Angola was the third-largest diamond producer in the world, contributing over 14 million carats, behind Botswana (18.12 million) and Russia (37.3 million carats).

According to Laureano Paulo, Executive Director of ENDIAMA EP, speaking to the press on Thursday during the semi-annual diamond subsector review, the country expects to surpass 2024 production levels, targeting nearly 15 million carats this year.

He stated that the goal is to maintain Angola’s position as the third-largest diamond producer.

For 2026, he added, the target is to produce 17 million carats, through restructuring plans and by improving the operational efficiency of certain mines.

Regarding the Lunhinga mine, which was at risk of bankruptcy, he announced that it will be equipped with geological, technical, and technological conditions for its restructuring.

Concerning the Yetwene mine, he noted that prospecting campaigns will be intensified to discover proven reserves and ensure the sustainability of operations.

The event, promoted by ENDIAMA EP and taking place since Wednesday at the Lueji A’nkonde University Campus auditorium, aims to assess the current state of the mining industry and devise strategies to mitigate the decline in global diamond prices.

Currently, ENDIAMA controls 54 projects in prospecting and restructuring, and 25 mining companies in operation.
