Ricardo Viegas de Abreu has announced the creation of an investment fund aimed at supporting projects in the transport and infrastructure sectors, reinforcing the Government’s commitment to positioning Angola as a leading logistics hub in the SADC region.
In an interview with TPA, the Minister of Transport highlighted the transformation of the sector he oversees as an essential driver of the country’s economic and social progress.
He emphasized that the sector has adopted an integrated and structured approach focused on sustainable development, with the goal of efficiently connecting Angola’s different regions and positioning the country as a strategic point in both the African and global contexts.
Viegas de Abreu, currently in Switzerland, announced in Geneva on Wednesday that the Government plans to connect the country’s main infrastructures through railways to facilitate trade domestically and with neighboring countries in the region.
“With regard to trade in particular, our master plan defines how to integrate these major infrastructures — ports, railways, airports, and roads — and allow their expansion, not only within the country but also by connecting them to neighboring countries,” the minister said during a roundtable at the 16th United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD16).
Angola has a 1,600-kilometer coastline, and its three main ports — Luanda, Lobito, and Namibe — are linked by railway lines.
Returning to his interview with the public broadcaster, the minister also encouraged Portuguese companies to change their strategy — shifting from being mere service providers to becoming investors, assuming risks, and managing infrastructure — similar to the model already implemented with the concession of the Luanda Multipurpose Terminal.
He added that upcoming tenders for the Lobito Port terminals and the Benguela Railway will strengthen this partnership model.
Along the same lines, Viegas de Abreu confirmed that the Government will secure an initial investment of around USD 3 billion for the Luanda Surface Metro, scheduled for 2026, considering the project’s complexity and the State’s need to take the first step to attract private investment in later phases.
The minister also stressed the importance of modern infrastructures such as the new Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport and the Lobito Corridor for Angola’s logistics transformation, expanding international partnerships and strategic investments.
These initiatives reinforce Angola’s vision of becoming a competitive and integrated logistics and transportation hub.
