Luanda Port is targeting a 20% to 25% increase in cargo handling capacity and vessel calls from 2027, drawing on investments already made in terminal modernisation and operational digitisation, its commercial director said on Tuesday.
Silvano Araújo presented the growth outlook at the close of a panel on smart ports, automation and operational efficiency at the second edition of the Angola Hub Transport and Logistics Summit, which runs in Luanda until 30 September.
In 2025, Luanda Port handled approximately 18 million tonnes of cargo and received around 5,060 vessel calls, according to figures Araújo presented at the summit.
He said the projected expansion is directly linked to investments made across the port's various terminals, as well as the restoration of full operational capacity following construction works at the Multipurpose Terminal, where operator Nuatum is expected to take up concession.
Araújo acknowledged that the works at the Multipurpose Terminal had temporarily reduced container storage space, constraining overall port throughput. He expressed confidence that, once the works are completed, the port would recover and surpass its previous activity levels.
'We want the investments that have already been made to deliver results, so that from next year onwards we can expand our capacity,' he said.
The commercial director was careful to note that the anticipated growth 'does not depend solely on the Luanda Port administration,' but on the collective investment made by concessionaires operating across the port's various terminals.
On the digitisation front, Araújo said the port already operates a vessel traffic planning platform and is developing a system to monitor operational processes across its terminals in real time.
The strategy also envisages the progressive digitisation of procedures involving all participants in the port logistics chain, from shipping lines and freight forwarders to customs and inland hauliers.
This technological transformation is anchored in a broader smart port project, centred on the use of data analytics to support decision-making and anticipate operational requirements before they arise.
Araújo said a fully operational smart port model would reduce turnaround times, accelerate port operations and meaningfully improve overall efficiency for all users of the facility.
Luanda Port is also developing projects in clean energy, with the aim of creating conditions to supply shore-side green power to vessels during port calls, complementing conventional fuel supply services.
The clean energy initiative forms part of a wider modernisation strategy designed to align the port with evolving international maritime standards and environmental requirements.
Araújo said the port's participation in the summit also serves to strengthen dialogue with operators, investors and other stakeholders across the logistics chain, with a focus on efficiency, digitisation and the long-term competitiveness of the sector.
The second edition of the Angola Hub Transport and Logistics Summit has brought together in Luanda representatives of African governments, financial institutions, multilateral organisations, companies, investors and national and international operators.
Delegates are debating issues of transport, logistics, connectivity and economic integration through Wednesday, 30 September.
