Luanda Port is accelerating the modernisation of its infrastructure and services through the deployment of new technology systems and investment across its concessioned terminals, with the goal of cementing its position as a regional logistics hub, a senior port executive said on Thursday.
Silvano Araújo, Executive Administrator for Commercial Affairs, Planning and Vessel Programming at Luanda Port, made the announcement on the sidelines of the 41st edition of the International Fair of Angola (FILDA), held in Icolo e Bengo province. He said the modernisation drive is designed to boost operational efficiency and consolidate the port's role as a regional logistics platform.
The port used the trade fair to showcase the key technological advances it has recently implemented, centred on three structural projects, two of which are directly linked to the modernisation of port operations.
One of the flagship projects is a dedicated technology building equipped with a modern closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance system, which enables real-time monitoring of the port's entire operational perimeter, strengthening security and oversight of activities.
The port has also brought into service a Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) system, designed to monitor maritime traffic. The system improves the predictability of vessel arrivals, enables better scheduling of operations and increases efficiency in the management of different cargo types.
Araújo explained that Luanda Port currently operates as a landlord port, meaning the concessioned terminals are themselves investing in the modernisation of their equipment to streamline loading and unloading operations for both imports and exports.
He said these investments form part of a broader strategy to position Luanda Port as a major regional logistics hub, capitalising on Angola's strategic location on trade routes between the East and the West.
Araújo added that the port already benefits from vessel waiting times lower than those recorded at several competing ports in the region, an advantage he described as a key competitive differentiator in attracting higher volumes of transit cargo.
In terms of regional standing, he indicated that Luanda Port currently ranks between fourth and fifth among the leading ports in the region, handling approximately 18 to 19 million tonnes of cargo per year.
He stressed that the port's objective is to enhance its competitive capacity through continuous improvement of operational efficiency, modernisation of services and the consolidation of its logistics function at a regional level.
FILDA, Angola's largest business trade fair, runs until Sunday under the theme 'Produce and Innovate Locally, Win Globally', and is drawing 2,348 national and international exhibitors to this year's edition.
