Passenger train services to Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport (AIAAN) resumed this Monday (27), around ten months after operations were suspended. The first train departed from Bungo station, in downtown Luanda, heading to the AIAAN station in Icolo e Bengo province, according to Caminho de Ferro de Luanda (CFL).
In a statement, CFL said the new schedule is based on a structured technical and operational plan. At this initial stage, only inter-station services will operate, with stops at Bungo, Musseques, Viana, Baía, and AIAAN.
The first train departed at around 7:30 a.m., making intermediate stops at Musseques, Viana, and Baía. It is the first of four daily trains scheduled from Monday to Friday.
However, service limitations remain. Passengers arriving at AIAAN after 6:00 p.m. will need to rely on alternative transport, as the last train back to Luanda departs at 6:10 p.m.
CFL clarified that this marks the first phase of the service resumption, which will be implemented gradually. The process depends on the completion of pedestrian crossings and other infrastructure aimed at improving safety along the railway line, as well as enhancements in operational efficiency.
Once these interventions are completed, the company plans to move forward with a second phase of service expansion.
Passenger rail services to AIAAN were suspended in June 2025 due to technical and operational reasons. At the time, CFL had indicated a resumption by September of the same year, which did not materialize.
The reactivation comes as AIAAN experiences increased activity, particularly with the rise in international flights, reinforcing the importance of a functional and efficient rail link, as well as improved road traffic management for airport access.
It is worth recalling that the express service between Bungo and AIAAN was inaugurated in November 2024, with 12 daily frequencies over a route of approximately 45 kilometers. Currently, travel time is estimated at around one hour, although still affected by operational constraints along the line.
