Icolo e Bengo Kicks Off 28km Road Paving Between Cambembeia And Nzenza do Golungo

Angola’s Icolo e Bengo provincial government on Thursday formally awarded the contract to pave 28 kilometres of road between the localities of Cambembeia and Nzenza do Golungo in Catete municipality, a project designed to unlock agricultural potential and improve connectivity in the Calomboloca commune.

The scope of works specifies a ten-metre-wide, two-lane carriageway fitted with public lighting and open drainage channels on both sides to handle rainwater runoff, with the broader aim of spurring economic development along the corridor.

The road surface will be reinforced concrete 20 centimetres thick, with a seven-metre drivable lane, pavements, kerbs, horizontal and vertical road markings, a small bridge and several hydraulic culverts.

The project also incorporates a potable water network and ducting for communications infrastructure — including fibre-optic and telephony cables — as well as electricity transformer stations to serve communities along the route, which passes through the Calomboloca Penitentiary.

Work is scheduled to begin in October 2026, with completion set for November 2027, giving contractor LINTEL – Engenharia e Construção S.A. a 14-month execution window. Supervision will be carried out by LUVTAR SOLUÇÕES.

Speaking to reporters at the consignment ceremony, LINTEL’s site manager Kalai Xu said the company would do everything necessary to meet the delivery deadline, starting with the establishment of the construction camp, mobilisation of equipment and machinery, clearance works and earthworks using local labour.

Provincial Governor Auzílio Jacob described the road as strategically important, noting that it borders Bengo province at Úcua municipality, a key corridor for vehicles carrying agricultural produce to Luanda’s Mercado do 30 market — a flow of goods that the completed road should facilitate significantly.

The governor elaborated that the surrounding area contains numerous productive farmland plots, but that spoilage of crops has been a persistent problem because the existing dirt track does not allow safe or steady movement of the three-wheeled cupapata vehicles used to transport goods.

‘With the construction of this modern road, complete with integrated and complementary services, conditions will be created to attract investment, minimise social problems for residents, promote agriculture, generate employment and income,’ Jacob said.

He added that further benefits would include improved mobility for people, more comfortable movement of vehicles and merchandise, smoother journeys, the emergence of new infrastructure along the corridor and enhanced public safety.

‘This Cambembeia–Nzenza do Golungo highway will also help shorten the distance and travel time for patients reaching hospitals and for students getting to schools,’ Jacob said. ‘Beyond that, it has the potential to boost fishing activity on the Zenza River and encourage the emergence of public transport fleets and taxi services along the route.’

The award marks the fourth road consignment in Catete municipality in 2026, following earlier contracts for the Maria Teresa–Kaquengue/Caculo Cahango stretch, a section in the Terra Nova neighbourhood and the Cabiri–Catete corridor. Taken together, those four projects bring the total length of asphalt or paved roads to be completed in the area to 64 kilometres by the end of 2027.
