Angola’s rehabilitation of National Road 190 (EN-190) in the eastern province of Moxico Leste is more than 70% complete, with over 130 kilometres of the 200-kilometre-plus route already asphalted under a project budgeted at approximately US$276 million.
João dos Santos ‘Liberdade’, Minister of State and Head of the Military House of the President of the Republic, travelled to Moxico Leste on Monday to assess the physical progress of construction works on the EN-190.
The section under construction since 2025 connects Cazombo, the provincial capital, to the municipalities of Nana Candundo and Luau, spanning a distance of more than 200 kilometres.
In its entirety, the EN-190 stretches 247 kilometres, of which 183 kilometres had deteriorated severely and were earmarked for rehabilitation.
Since the start of the contract, budgeted at around US$276 million, more than 130 kilometres have been paved, leaving approximately 60 kilometres still to be asphalted. The project also includes the construction of three bridges, road signage, environmental restoration and the development of lateral road margins.
Santos ‘Liberdade’ was accompanied on the visit by Minister of Public Works, Urban Planning and Housing Carlos dos Santos. The delegation’s agenda also included a technical site visit to the land earmarked for the construction of a new airport and the future city of Cazombo.
At the conclusion of the visit, the delegation was scheduled to hold a meeting with members of the provincial government.
Moxico Leste, home to more than 400,000 inhabitants and with Cazombo as its capital, is one of three new provinces formalised in Angola in 2025, with the stated objective of bringing public services closer to local populations.
The province comprises nine municipalities: Caianda, Cameia, Cazombo, Lago Dilolo, Lóvua do Zambeze, Luacano, Luau, Macondo and Nana Candundo.
