Angolan Government Has Rehabilitated 26,500 Kilometers of Roads

Over the past 50 years, the Angolan government has rehabilitated a total of 26,500 kilometers of paved roads. This public investment enabled the country to add 16,000 kilometers to the 10,500 it inherited from the former Autonomous Roads Board of Angola, the entity responsible during the colonial era.

The data was shared by the Minister of Public Works, Urbanism, and Housing, Carlos Alberto Gregório dos Santos, in an interview with Jornal Economia & Finanças, published by Edições Novembro EP, in the edition to be released tomorrow, Monday (9).

According to the minister, over these 50 years, three main areas stand out: Roads, Bridges, and Housing. In the road sector, Angola now has an extensive network of 79,300 kilometers.

“In 1975, we inherited from the former Autonomous Roads Board of Angola the information that the country then had 10,500 km of paved roads. Fifty years later, we have 26,500 km of paved roads, of which 15,000 are part of the primary network (connecting provincial capitals to neighboring countries); the remaining 11,500 km consist of secondary or municipal roads, commonly referred to as secondary and tertiary roads,” he stated.

According to Minister Carlos dos Santos, this progress in road infrastructure enables the movement of people and goods, while also boosting other sectors such as Agriculture, Tourism, Mining, Health, and Education, which are thus better able to carry out their activities. The country also has 4,900 bridge structures, ranging from large to medium and small sizes.

The second key area is Housing. Since the launch of the National Urbanism and Housing Program in 2009, responsibilities have been shared between the state, private entities, cooperatives, and self-construction initiatives.

To date, the state has completed the construction of 350,000 houses, surpassing the initial commitment of building 150,000 under the National Urbanism and Housing Program. Regarding the urbanism sector, Carlos Alberto states that much work remains to be done, especially in the provision of master and development plans for cities.

In terms of Road Infrastructure, around 400 kilometers of roads have been rehabilitated. In the area of Land Management and Housing, a total of 1,858 social housing units have been completed, including 389 in Cabinda province, 406 in Cuanza-Sul, and 1,168 in Luanda.
