A delegation from the National Assembly’s Fifth Committee on Economy and Finance visited Lobito Port in Benguela province on Monday to assess progress on the Lobito Corridor and evaluate the strategic role of the port infrastructure in strengthening Angola’s national economy.
The delegation was led by MP Aia-Eza da Silva Troso and was received by Kátila Vanessa Neto, the port’s Commercial, Marketing and Concessions Director, representing the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Celso Rosas.
During the meeting, Neto presented an operational review of the company, outlined the principal projects currently under way and set out the port’s growth projections. She disclosed that Lobito Port intends to reach seven million tonnes of cargo throughput over the next ten years, consolidating its strategic positioning as a port oriented primarily towards exports.
To support that growth trajectory, dredging works have been completed at the berth, increasing its depth to 14.7 metres and enabling the port to receive large Panamax-class vessels.
Lobito Port handled 1.8 million tonnes of cargo in 2025. In the first half of the current year, 931,000 tonnes were transported across 177 vessel calls.
Neto also highlighted the results of the terminal concessions awarded to Lobito Atlantic Railway (LAR) and AGL Lobito Terminal, noting that the process was supported by information sessions for port workers and accompanied by ongoing investment in staff training, process digitalisation and English-language proficiency programmes.
Despite the broadly positive outlook, port management drew the parliamentary delegation’s attention to constraints arising from the current condition of the railway line in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the absence of a rail link with Zambia — factors that limit the flow of goods destined for the Lobito Corridor’s principal inland markets.
The company said coordinated efforts are under way with the relevant authorities to address these limitations in the short to medium term.
The reception also included Elizabeth de Assunção João, Director of the Benguela Provincial Office for Transport, Traffic and Urban Mobility, as well as directors, advisers and departmental heads from the Empresa Portuária do Lobito. Following the formal meeting, the parliamentary delegation conducted a panoramic tour of the port facilities from the terrace of the headquarters building.
