ANE Acquires New Metallic Emergency Bridges for Rainy Season

The National Road Administration (ANE) invested six million dollars (444 million meticais) in the acquisition of metal bridges to be used in case of road cuts in the present rainy season.

According to “Notícias”, the infrastructures were acquired with financing from the African Development Bank (AfDB), within the scope of the contingency plan of the present rainy season.

The plan includes the identification of roads with a high risk of damage, mitigation actions and possible alternative routes.

The information was released Thursday, in Praia de Bilene, Gaza province, by the director general of ANE, Américo Dimande, in the Extended Board of Directors.

According to him, the provinces of Sofala and Cabo Delgado will be the most privileged, which is justified by the fact that they were hit by tropical cyclones Idai and Kenneth last year.

In this context, bridges, with a length of up to two thousand meters, will be placed in a shipyard in the Dondo district, in Sofala, and others may be opened in the south or north, depending on the history of road damage over the past few years.

The infrastructures can also be used in case of need for intervention in hydraulic infrastructures. “The bridges will be in the country in the middle of the current month,” said

With regard to the construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of roads and bridges, in order to increase the mobility of people and goods across the country, Dimande said that work is underway to ensure the transitability of roads throughout the year.

As an example, he noted that work on the road linking Malema and Cuamba is underway in the province of Nampula, as well as the asphalting of the Caniçado-Mapai road in Gaza.

He added that plans are in place for the rehabilitation of 787 kilometers of national roads and 4,000 kilometers of regional and district roads.

He stressed that the sector he leads has the challenge of materializing the project of the Zumbo-Indian connection, through the Bene-Zumbo, Madamba-Mutarara-Rio Chire, Chire-Morrumbala-Zero-Mopeia-Luabo-Chinde sections, in the provinces of Tete and Zambezia.
