Machipanda Line in Rehabilitation

It has Started on this week the replacement of rails in the railway line that connects the city of Beira, in Sofala, to the village of Machipanda, in Manica, in an investment estimated at 200 million US dollars.

The ceremony to launch this work took place in the district of Dondo and was led by the president of the Board of Directors of the company
Ports and Railways of Mozambique (CFM), Miguel Matabel.

At the occasion, Matabel explained that the old rails supported 40 kilograms per meter, while the new ones will support 45, which will provide an increase in production and productivity.
He explained that the work consists in joining seven 18-meter rails to form a single 126-meter rail and thus form a more robust line with international standards, through which trains with greater weight will be able to pass.

“We used to use 60-ton cars in terms of gross tonnage, but now we will use 80-ton cars, which means that this phase is crucial because the trains will run on the tracks,” he said.

As for the rehabilitation of the line, the CFM Chairman revealed that the level of execution of the work is 305%. Matabel made it known that Covid-19 has negatively affected the course of the works, because the company is still waiting for an equipment that should have arrived in March of last year from Europe and Asia.

Even so, she assured that the rehabilitation of the line, which began late last year, will be completed over the course of 2022.
