The effects of the Covid-19 pandemic continue to put pressure on business activity, jeopardizing the private sector’s efforts to maintain jobs, aiming to ensure the survival and social welfare of the majority of Mozambicans.
According to the survey conducted by the Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique (CTA), by August 2020, the number of companies severely affected by the pandemic and that suspended activities amounted to 4300 at the national level, with the largest percentage being companies in the hospitality sector, which accounted for 75% of the total.
However, as of September, with the easing of restrictions, most businesses have started to reopen, bringing this number down to less than 25%. According to CTA estimates, the year 2020 will have ended with about 1075 companies completely closed due to covid-19.
From a health perspective, there is no doubt the deep crisis that has resulted in hospitalizations, deaths and suffering, particularly in this second wave of infections, which began in November/December 2020.
It is in this context that CTA, in the framework of the various actions it has developed since the outbreak of this pandemic in Mozambique, in March 2020, decided to create a committee to support companies in order to ensure the continuity of business and the production process, essential for the stability of the national economy, in a context of restrictive measures imposed by the spread of this pandemic.
