Cabinda Gulf Oil Company (CABGOC), Chevron’s Angolan subsidiary, is disbursing approximately US$979,000 this year to rehabilitate and re-equip the central laboratory of Cabinda Provincial Hospital — an upgrade that will allow the facility to process up to 120 patients per day.
The formal handover of works between CABGOC and construction contractor Mota-Engil took place on Wednesday, in a ceremony witnessed by the provincial secretary for Health, Ruben de Fátima Buco.
Under the agreement signed by both parties, the works — including the installation of modern technological equipment — are to be completed within eight months.
Speaking at the ceremony, provincial Health secretary Ruben de Fátima Buco said that once completed, the laboratory would be capable of conducting microbiology, parasitology and biochemistry examinations, including a serological component, among other diagnostic disciplines.
Buco highlighted Chevron’s contribution as a partner of the Provincial Government of Cabinda in strengthening the region’s healthcare system.
Chevron’s director of corporate relations, Renato de Almeida, acknowledged that the laboratory rehabilitation would reinforce diagnostic capacity, improve the quality of laboratory services and contribute to a more efficient response to the population’s healthcare needs.
The project is being financed under the Cabinda Economic Development Programme, which — in addition to CABGOC — involves the Block 0 associates, the National Agency for Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels (ANPG), and the Provincial Government of Cabinda.
