The Job Market and Precautions to Take With Social Media

Although social media are spaces for free expression, it is important to pay attention to the image you project, as it can jeopardize your professional future.

Regardless of the platform or the amount of time you spend on it, a single photo, comment, or inappropriate post can affect your chances of being recruited by a company.

Even though social media are democratic spaces, they also serve as a showcase for each user. People and organizations form an impression of your profile (as the name suggests) through it. It is increasingly common for recruiters to check not only LinkedIn but also other social networks before proceeding with a candidate’s hiring process.

Therefore, whether you are entering the job market, looking for a new challenge, or already professionally established, there are key precautions you should take on social media.

Don’t Look Bad in Photos

Profile photos, especially your main profile picture, act as your business card. Care should be taken when selecting it.

While you should be aware of the image you want to project on all networks, LinkedIn deserves the most attention for professional purposes. A LinkedIn photo should convey professionalism and credibility, so avoid party photos, sunglasses, hats, selfies, or images with other people or animals.

Position yourself naturally and comfortably, ask someone to take the photo in a well-lit space with a neutral background. Similar to a remote work profile picture, only your upper body needs to look impeccable.

Watch for Spelling Mistakes

Attention to writing should not end with your resume or cover letter. Even though social media often allow informal language, spelling errors on your profile can negatively impact an employer’s perception.

Be Careful With Comments and Shares

Social media are closely connected to the job market, as employees represent the company even outside of work. Companies often evaluate whether a candidate fits their culture by analyzing what they post and comment on these platforms.

Offensive, racist, or xenophobic posts or comments, for instance, can severely damage your professional reputation, as companies do not want to be associated with such content.

Set Your Account to Private

To make your social media profiles more private, you should set all of them to private. Only people you approve will be able to follow your account and view your posts, followers list, and interactions. You can accept or reject access requests.

You can also restrict the information shared with specific contacts. For example, if you don’t want a colleague to see certain content, simply block them on the respective platform.

Maintaining Social Media Care After Hiring

Even after securing a job, maintaining a professional image remains important. You must avoid revealing company strategies, trade secrets, or offending your employer. Violating these rules could result in dismissal for just cause.

Outside of such issues and within your freedom of expression, employers cannot penalize you for what you post, but it can influence how your employer and colleagues perceive you.

What Companies Check on Each Platform

See Also

Do not assume recruiters only view LinkedIn. Employers may also analyze your presence on other networks:

  • Facebook: Evaluates your personal life, lifestyle, beliefs, causes you support, and photos.
  • Instagram: Checks your followers, interests, and story content to assess alignment with company values.
  • Twitter: Looks at your connections and the relevance of your tweets.

Use Social Media to Boost Your Career

When used correctly, social media can offer significant advantages, including professional visibility. Share content related to your field, build a solid and specialized image, network with professionals, and stay alert for potential opportunities.
