Angola And Egypt Forge Transport Partnership as OPAIA Pitches Amufert at Alamein Forum

Angola and Egypt have established a business partnership in the transport sector, the chairman of Angola's Private Investment and Export Promotion Agency (AIPEX), Arlindo Rangel, said on Friday on the sidelines of the Alamein Africa-GO63 Forum in El Alamein, Egypt.

Rangel declined to provide further details of the arrangement, speaking to the press ahead of Angola's participation in the forum, which runs from 2 to 4 October in El Alamein with a delegation of 15 Angolan companies.

He said the forum was generating productive discussions around the promotion of Angolan exports to new markets — particularly those that have already achieved self-sufficiency — as well as the establishment of Angolan companies abroad.

Agostinho Kapaia, president of the OPAIA Group, who was invited to sit on a panel dedicated to food security in Africa, expressed satisfaction at being able to share the group's experience with the Amufert fertiliser project.

Kapaia said he was proud of the public-private model underpinning the project, describing it as 'important for the country and for the continent.'

The forum's overarching objective is to create conditions under which African entrepreneurs can do business within the framework of the African Union's drive to expand intra-African trade.

'We presented the Amufert project with a view to finding potential partnerships. We held several meetings and, in fact, there is enormous potential in our country and on our continent,' Kapaia said.

During the panel, participants emphasised the importance of African solutions to African problems, particularly through the use of African natural resources. The Amufert project was held up as a model of public-private collaboration, with state participation channelled through Sonangol and the Angolan Sovereign Fund alongside private-sector contributions.

'We are using an African product, young Angolans and financing from an African bank,' Kapaia said, adding that the message conveyed at the forum centred on the need to produce in Africa, process African products, feed the continent and then export to the world.

'Africa cannot be only a problem. It must also be part of the solution to the world's food security challenge,' he said.

Angola's Minister of Foreign Affairs also took part in the forum on Friday, intervening in the Economic Diplomacy Dialogue, held within the framework of the AUDA-NEPAD Summit and the 8th Bi-Annual Coordination Summit of the African Union and Regional Economic Communities (RECs).

The Alamein Forum was established by the Egyptian government, Afreximbank and AUDA-NEPAD to bring together influential African policymakers in an unprecedented alliance between public and private sector leaders, combining political authority with business capability.
