Government Encourages Cassava Cultivation

The Agriculture and Fisheries sector in Nampula encourages peasant families to invest in cassava cultivation, as a way to ensure food security, which is compromised by the lack of rainfall.

Nampula’s provincial director for Agriculture and Fishing, Ernesto Pacule, said that increasing production of this crop could be the most viable alternative for local peasants, given that the rain had not yet fallen regularly.

The authorities expected the rainy season to start in October 2020, but so far the conditions have not been met to sow the seed, given that the germination power depends on regular rainfall.

There are districts where it is raining, however, the majority of the government encourages the cultivation of recent manioc from drought. In view of this situation, the producers who sowed early foresee losses in large areas in this first season, and there are steps taken by the government to subsidize the peasants in seeds in an attempt to minimize the impact of the drought.
